Today in Discrete we discussed taking money out of a bank account.  We learned to fill out withdrawal slips, and write a proper check.  Homework due tomorrow is the front and back of a worksheet practicing these skills.

Today in class we had our party as a reward for doing so well on the past two tests!  No new work but you do need to bring in your completed worksheet 4-1 to class on Thursday!

Today in class we began talking about checking and savings accounts.  We discussed the benefits of having checking and savings accounts and learned to write a deposit slip.  Homework for Thursday is to complete worksheet 4.1 on deposits!  Great job on the Voting Tests everyone!  The class averages (taking only into consideration those students who have completed the tests) were 80% and 79% respectively!

Be sure to bring in worksheet 4.1 on Thursday!

Today in class we are reviewing for the test over voting methods and fairness criteria.  If we do well on the test, we will have a reward day upon return from break!  The test will be tomorrow in class, be sure to study and get your homework in!!

Today in class we started learning about the head-to-head fairness criteria.  We also got back our quizzes from last week.  The scores were either very good, or very poor.  There weren't too many C's on this test, it was A's and B's or D's and F's. Keep up the good work A's and B's--the party is on the line still based off of the test next week.  D's and F's,  come in to re-take and get comfortable with these voting methods because they will be on the test!

Today we took a quiz over the first half of the voting methods chapter.  The quiz covered the four voting methods we have been talking about in class for the past few weeks. I hope you did well!  We will be finishing the chapter up before Thanksgiving break to determine if we've earned a class celebration!

Today in class we discussed plurality and plurality with elimination methods of voting.  Students completed a worksheet in class exploring plurality and plurality with elimination using preference tables given.  We also analyzed the data for the votes each class cast last week for the reward day using each of these two methods.

Today in class we discussed a voting project we will be working on.  We are learning about the 4 common methods of voting.  Students voted in class for potential rewards.  If the class average is above a 75% on the voting test at the end of this unit, we will have a celebration. The type of celebration and type of treat we get will be determined by the votes cast today in class.

We will analyze the votes using all 4 voting methods and come up with a final decision after all the results are in.

Students were given time at the end of class to make up missing assignments and fill out missing parts of their foldable.

Today in class students have a last chance to complete their credit card project. This project will be a test grade so we want you to be sure to put forth your best effort!

You will be graded upon:

• Completing the Chart of Credit Card Information
• Interviewing at least 2 friends, family members, or teachers about their credit card knowledge
• The paper you write (1 page typed) about what you've learned about importance of credit card literacy
• Group sharing (to take place in class)

Today in class we took the test over credit card charges.  Anyone who has not completed the test must do so within 2 weeks of today to earn higher than a 50% on the test.  Prior to taking the test, your grade will remain a zero.  I have high hopes for your scores on this test! Looking forward to grading them!

Finish up working on the paper you have to write about what you've learned about credit cards!

Today in class we did practice test to review for the real test we will be taking tomorrow.  Just a reminder to all of you that you have a paper on Credit Card literacy due Thursday!  That's coming up really fast--you have tonight and tomorrow night to get that together!  You should also have the chart that Mrs. Ragen gave you filled out to turn in with your report.

Today in class we learned the final method for calculating finance charges.  We had time in class to work on and some of us completed the homework practicing this method. The homework is a worksheet that you need to get from Miss Engle or Mrs. Ragen if you were absent.  See us if you need help.  We are reviewing tomorrow and testing over this unit on Wednesday!

Don't forget to work on your paper about credit cards--that will be collected on Thursday!

Today in class we began a project exploring credit cards benefits and shortcomings.  Students are to look up the APR, Annual fee, Credit Limit, Benefits, Penalties and other important factors on 4 credit cards.  They will then interview 2-4 adults in their lives about their credit card knowledge.  Students will write a paper discussing their findings.  The paper should be at least 1 page typed.

This is their only assignment for the weekend unless there is any late work that needs to be turned in!  Have a great weekend!

Today in class we had a work day.  The students were required to correct incorrect answers and write a sentence describing what they did wrong. 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, and a pink worksheet were all due today.

Today in class we learned about the 2nd of 3 methods to calculate finance charges.  This method is called the Average Daily Balance method Without New Purchases.  This basically means you are charged interest on the average amount you owed throughout the billing period.  There is a short worksheet with an example for homework.

Whoops!  It looks like I didn't publish on Wednesday and didn't post at all on Thursday.  Wednesday we began talking about a very important topic for students.  Students are just getting to the age where credit card companies start to seek them out.  To help them be aware of the tricks of the credit card trade and to make smart spending choices, we are learning about credit cards.

Wednesday we focused on what we would see on a credit card bill.  Thursday we learned one of the ways that a credit card calculates finance charges. There were two short worksheets given--one on each topic that have been collected.

Today in class we had a quiz over the recent topics in class--purchase price, sales tax, unit price, markups and discounts.  No homework, but students who missed this quiz need to schedule a time to take it as soon as possible!

Hello all, today we learned about coupons and discounts.  We didn't get to the insane savings of the folks on Extreme Couponing on TLC but we did learn the ins and outs of coupons and discounts.  There is a worksheet on discounts and a quiz review due before class tomorrow.

The quiz will cover sales tax, unit price, markup/markup percent, and discounts.  Students will have the remainder of the class period to work on assignments that need to be completed for class and/or to study for any test retakes they would like to attempt.  The last day to take retakes will be this Friday!

Today in class we learned about markup and markup percent.  The students took short notes and had time in class to complete 6 questions about markup.  Students finished up the unit pricing activity from Thursday as well.  The 6 questions on markup percent will be collected on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

Today in class we learned about unit pricing and did an activity searching through the grocery ads!  Students should turn in the project we worked on during block schedule.

Tuesday/Wednesday, September 25/26, 2012

Tuesday and Wednesday are Block Schedule days here at OHS.  Therefore the updates for Tuesday and Wednesday are the same.  We will get back the Unit 1 tests and check them today. If you are unhappy with your score you are more than welcome to set up an appointment with Mrs. Ragen or me to retake it within the next two weeks.  

After going over the Unit 1 test we will check the homework from Monday and hand it in.  Then we will take a break from our regularly scheduled classwork to answer the question that I've been hearing a lot in the last month "When am I ever going to use this?"

We will take time in class to work on an investigation called "Math in the Real World."  You will designated websites for jobs that require math skills and share information about them.  You'd be surprised at some of the jobs that require math--there's a lot more out there than Math Teacher, Banker, and Analyst!!  If you do not finish this in class it will be due when you return to class on Thursday!

Today we said good-bye to set theory and hello to spending money!  We learned how to compute sales tax and final purchase price. There were short notes over the information and homework was given on a printed worksheet.  Due by the next time we have class (tomorrow for 2nd, and Wednesday for 5th!)

Today in class we began notes for use on the unit test which is coming up on Friday.  We also got our quiz scores back so we know what to study to retake and improve our scores for the upcoming unit test!

Students who are unhappy with their scores can retake the quiz by appointment with Mrs. Ragen or myself.  Tomorrow we will finish up our notecards and practice for the big test!

Today in class we had a quiz review for the quiz we will be taking tomorrow!  This week we are wrapping up everything to do with sets so we can start fresh with a new topic--I know many of you will be happy to hear this!  The quiz review was given in class and shows the basic format of the quiz.

The quiz will cover:

• Proving 2 sets are equal by shading a Venn Diagram
• Filling out a Venn Diagram with poll information and answering questions about it
• Infinite sets

Later this week, we will have a test over the entire chapter.  The test will cover the above topics and also:

• Defining sets
• Roster, Description, and Set Builder Notation
• Subsets
• Union, Intersection, and Complement of sets

Good luck!  Be sure to study, we will review in class but many of us are not making the most of time given to us, which means we must need to study at home!  

The last day to turn in homework assignments for this unit will be Friday.  I will get Powerschool updated and try to post in class.  I had 14 missing assignments this weekend..if one of those is yours get it in!

Today in class we took notes over infinite sets.  We learned the method for proving that a set is infinite--creating a 1-1 correspondence with a subset of itself.  We also learned that the cardinal number of an infinite set can indeed be defined.  For the set of counting numbers the cardinal number is Aleph-Naught.  Any set that can be created a 1-1 correspondence with the set of counting numbers has this same cardinal number.

No homework today.  Practice these skills in class tomorrow!

Today we was an early out day!  During our shortened class period, we took notes about how to appropriately fill in poll information into a Venn Diagram with three sets.  These notes were collected for a grade and will be returned to you for use on your next quiz/test.  If you were here and did not turn them in, you won't have any notes for your quiz.

Today in class we practiced answering questions from a Venn Diagram that we created.  We spent time in class working on our assignment # 4-12 all on a sheet given out in class.  Attempt these problems at home.  Each problem should have a Venn Diagram that you draw to answer the questions.

We will talk about these problems again in class tomorrow.  You need to have 7 of the 9 problems complete/best attempt as you walk in the door!

Today in class we warmed up with questions about sets.  We spent the remainder of the class period working on a quiz.  Scores will be posted to PowerSchool as soon as I get them graded.  Hopefully by tomorrow;  Monday at the latest!

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 (QUIZ Tomorrow!)

Today in class, we finished notes off learning about equal sets in Venn Diagrams and seeing for ourselves that De Morgan's laws are true.  We spent  the remainder of class time working on a review sheet for the upcoming quiz.

We went over all of the answers to the review sheet in class so each student should have a correct study guide to take home to study tonight.  The quiz will be over the set theory we have covered in the last 2 weeks.

Topics include :

• Union of sets
• Intersection of sets
• Subsets
• Complements (everything outside of given set)
• Elements of sets (the special "e" symbol to tell if something is in a set)
• Cardinal numbers (number of elements in a set, written n(A)

Today in Discrete we started notes and learning about equality of Sets with Venn Diagrams as well as how to fill out a Venn Diagram containing 3 sets.

Homework from Friday was collected today but will be accepted after today marked late.  The collected assignment was a worksheet on Venn Diagrams.  Many students finished it during class time on Friday and enjoyed a homework free weekend!

Tomorrow we will complete notes on set equality and special Venn Diagrams and practice.

Today in class we completed the group activity exploring the possible subsets that exist given a set of numbers.  We discovered a connection between subsets of certain sizes and elements of Pascal's triangle.  All work was done in class today. No homework was given.  If subsets are still tripping you up, please come in before or after school for help!  Don't wait until the test to get help!

Last week we were introduced to set theory.  There is a lot of new vocabulary involved when learning about a new topic so last week we spent time on the vocabulary and ways to represent sets.  Today we introduced subsets:  which can be smaller, more easily manageable pieces of a larger set. 

Students had a worksheet on identifying subsets for homework tonight.  They did not have time to work on this in class today.  If you missed class see me or Mrs. Ragen to get the homework!

Today in class we took notes about sets and set theory.  Second hour class received the assignment, but we ran out of time in fifth period.

The assignment is:

•  pg 51 (35-38); (44-47); (51-55).  Pg 51 was/will be handed out in class.  
• Due:  2nd hour: Tomorrow
• 5th hour Friday. 

Please do the assignment on a separate piece of paper, in pencil!  I will be here before and after school to offer any help!
